Preparing for a life without OS MasterMap Topography

We pride ourselves on being your trusted partner in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of geospatial data. Recently, Ordnance Survey (OS) shared its long-term product roadmap during the OS Partner Conference, which includes the evolution of the OS National Geographic Database (NGD) and the eventual retirement of several legacy products to make way for more advanced alternatives.

We know that changes to foundational data require careful planning. That’s why we’re committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all our customers.

What’s changing?

The OS is moving toward a more flexible, “feature-first” data model. The most significant update involves the eventual replacement of the OS MasterMap Topography layer (OSMM Topo) with a new, enhanced product called OS BaseMap Pro.

What can you expect from OS BaseMap Pro?

While OSMM Topo has been a cornerstone of GB mapping for over 20 years, technology has moved on. OS BaseMap Pro isn’t just an update; it is a ground-up reimagining of what a foundational map should be.

Built on the power of the OS National Geographic Database (NGD), here’s what OS BaseMap Pro has to offer:

  • A modern data model: Unlike the legacy structure of MasterMap, OS BaseMap Pro is designed specifically for today’s digital platforms and GIS workflows. It will be easier to integrate and more flexible to use.
  • Faster, dependable refresh cycles: Leveraging the NGD infrastructure means you will get access to key updates and real-world changes much sooner than before. It is expected that the refresh cycle of OS Basemap Pro will be monthly.
  • Enhanced analytics: It is designed to work in perfect harmony with other OS NGD themes. This allows you to connect rich attribution data with the familiar cartographic context you rely on, unlocking much deeper levels of insight.
  • The trusted “OS look”: Despite the technical overhaul, the data will retain the authoritative, highly detailed cartographic style and pre-integrated stylesheets that make OS mapping the gold standard.
  • Accessible formats: To make adoption as easy as possible, it will be available in modern formats like GeoPackage and CSV, alongside delivery via the OS Data Hub APIs.

To give peace of mind and plenty of time to prepare, OS has committed to a long-term transition window:

  • 2027: The scheduled full launch of OS BaseMap Pro
  • 2028: The official withdrawal notice for OSMM Topo is expected to be issued
  • 2027–2029: A two-year parallel running period where both datasets will be available, allowing for a steady transition of workflows
  • 2030: The final withdrawal of OSMM Topo

Other products, such as OS MasterMap Water Network, are on a more immediate track for withdrawal.

How do we know which OS products will be retiring?

Ordnance Survey publishes End of Life notices on its website and sends notification emails to the nominated PSGA Principal Contact for each organisation.

Continuity and support

We know that OS data is core to your operations. Our goal is to minimise disruption and provide you with equivalent – or better – data solutions.

Seamless transitions to equivalent data

Where a suitable replacement exists, such as the move from OSMM Topo to OS BaseMap Pro, we’ll do the heavy lifting to ensure you can transition to those equivalent datasets with minimal friction. We’re already planning how our services will support these new formats to ensure your processes remain unaffected.

Clear and proactive communication

We believe in “no surprises”. As the OS finalises technical specifications, we’ll communicate every relevant change to our data offering clearly and well in advance. Whether it’s a change in data structure or a shift in product availability, you’ll hear it from us in good time.

Looking ahead

While these changes represent a significant shift in the OS portfolio, the long lead times ensure there is no immediate risk to your current setups. This transition will ultimately allow for more detailed and up-to-date geospatial insights.

If you have any questions about the roadmap or how these changes might affect your specific projects, please reach out to your Account Manager or our dedicated Support Team.
