FOSS4G:UK talk: Automate PostGIS and QGIS using Event Triggers

Have you ever wished your database could take care of some of its own admin tasks? With PostgreSQL’s event triggers, it can!

In his talk at FOSS4G:UK 2025, Matt Walker will dive into the world of event triggers and show you how to use their power to save time and reduce risk.

Find out more about Event Triggers

Event triggers allow you to set up custom logic that kicks in when database objects are updated. You can think of them like a built-in automation assistant – or wingman – poised to act as soon as a trigger is set off.

For example, when a table is renamed or moved to a new schema an event trigger can maintain the link between the layer and its styles in the QGIS layer_styles table.

Matt’s talk will explore what event triggers are and how to define them. He’ll walk through maintaining the link between layers and their styles in the QGIS layer_styles table and automatically retaining the association between raster overviews and a main raster table..
